As we head into the cold winter months in Ireland, with Christmas just around the corner, we know families will be looking for holiday destinations that are both adult- and kid-friendly and geared for indoor and outdoor fun. Because, let’s be honest, there’s nothing worse than bored children bouncing off the walls during what’s supposed to be a great family getaway.
What should parents be looking for in family friendly hotels to ensure their stay is 100% perfect – for all involved? We’ve put together a list of our top criteria. Have a read and see if you agree.
Proximity to outdoor and indoor activities
Is your hotel of choice conveniently located to family-friendly adventure centres and parks? While we don’t want to overly indulge our kids, we do need them to be free to run around, adventure and expend some energy while they are at it.
Family-friendly spaces like The Zone Extreme Activity Centre in Navan, Co. Meath, comes to mind when we think of ‘geared for older kids’. They’ve got go-karting, lazer mazes, bowling and even archery activities for your older children to enjoy.
For the younger kids, there’s Hucklesberry Den – an indoor soft play adventure centre – or an educational play centre, where kids get to dress up and rule LoloTown. And then there’s Tayto Theme Park, which caters for all ages and activity preferences. There are animals to visit, rollercoaster rides to enjoy, restaurants to eat at, and general fun to be had for everyone.
Tasty food options for everyone
Top family friendly hotels have dining facilities where children are welcome. This means the restaurant staff work well with kids, no one is too hung up on the occasional spilt coke or ketchup, and the menu includes a selection of meals for children that are both wholesome and tasty. At the same time, mom and dad can enjoy some fine dining, or a pub meal or two, at its best.
Child-friendly accommodation choices
The rooms you retreat to at night after a day of fun-filled activities are also very important for your family getaway. Here you’ll look for private, clean, safe, and secure accommodation, where parents and kids can share rooms. You’ll want ensuite bathroom facilities, to make getting the kids ready for bed that much easier. A TV in the room wouldn’t hurt – for when no one is feeling adventurous and need something to do. Complimentary wifi (for mom and dad) so you can keep in touch with the rest of the world is a must, as well as a place to make a late-night cup of tea or coffee.
