St Patricks Day

Can you believe, St Patrick’s Day is just around the corner? As a visitor to Navan, County Meath, you’ll want to know about the fun, family events lined up for the holiday weekend, where locals and tourist alike will be celebrating this uniquely Irish holiday with good food, music, parades, dance – and a whole lot of green (of course)!

The Navan Shamrock Festival (16 March – 17 March 2018)

St Patrick’s Day holiday makers and festival goers can enjoy a two-day celebration of all things Irish at the Navan Shamrock Festival. Some of the main events lined up for the festival are:

  • Annual fireworks display: The carnival-style, Navan Shamrock Festival will officially launch on the evening of the 16th March with a fireworks display in the Blackwater Park. Bring the kids from 7pm onwards to enjoy this festival highlight.
  • Walking parade: The St Patrick’s Parade kicks off on Saturday at 2pm. Join other green-clothed festival-goers and brightly coloured floats for a parade around town, leaving from the Navan Enterprise Centre on Trim Road and ending (for those on foot) at the infamous town hub, the Navan Market Square.

According to Festival organizer, Mary Kierans, the theme for the parade this year is ‘Irish Music’. Anyone wishing to join the parade can call 087 967 1173, or send an email to navanshamrockfestival@gmail.com, to have their names added to the parade list.

Green hats galore on St Paddys Day!

St Patrick’s Day in a nutshell

St Paddy’s Day, otherwise known as ‘Lá Fhéile Pádraig’ – ‘The Day of the Feast of St Patrick’ –  is celebrated across the globe each year in commemoration of the Catholic Patron Saint of Ireland. Green ribbons and shamrocks were the traditional symbols worn to honour St Patrick, but, over the centuries, the 17th March has become a day to celebrate all things Irish, including Irish folklore, music, food, drink and tradition, which is why it is also common for people to dress up as leprechauns or accessorise from top to bottom in the colour green - to represent the 'Emerald Isle'.
